International funding

The NIHR has a long established history of funding studies with an element of international collaboration.

All NIHR-funded programmes will consider funding for international studies where the contract is held in the UK, but please contact individual programmes to check eligibility before applying.

Example of international collaboration: Joint NIHR Health Technology Assessment commissioned calls with Australian National Health Medical Research Council

The NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme has a long-standing collaboration with the Australian National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and advertise joint commissioned calls inviting collaborative international research proposals to address shared research priorities. These collaborative commissioned calls are announced on the NIHR and NHMRC websites.

Collaborative proposals undergo a review by an NIHR HTA funding committee to assess UK costs and overall costs and value for money, shortlisted studies submit a more detailed full stage 2 proposal. All studies recommended for funding undergo an NHMRC financial review to ratify the Australian study costs.  For those studies formally approved for funding, each funder commits to fund the costs for research undertaken in their respective country.
