Are you a senior nurse or midwife who wants to utilise their research leadership and networking skills?
Following the success of the NIHR 70@70 Senior Nurse and Midwife Research Leader Programme, we are pleased to announce that we are looking for 15 senior nurses and midwives from a range of health and social care backgrounds with demonstrable ability to utilise their research leadership and networking skills at a local, regional and national level in order to embed a research active culture amongst nurses and midwives within their organisations and beyond.
In order to become one of the 15 Senior Research Leaders (SRL’s) you will be an established research leader who has led initiatives and developed strategies designed to promote a research active culture through empowering other nurses and midwives to support, lead and deliver research.
NIHR Nursing and Midwifery will work with the SRL’s to enable you to pioneer and implement research leadership activities and create a vibrant, sustainable, inclusive and integrated nursing and midwifery research culture. The programme will build on the success of the 70@70 programme by continuing its commitment to develop a diverse, inspirational and impactful pipeline of research leaders who can reach and represent nurses and midwives working across a range of different backgrounds.
The SRL’s will draw upon the broad range of specialisms and knowledge throughout the nursing and midwifery community to directly influence and lead NIHR decision making. They will use their leadership abilities to identify research priorities that relate closely to the challenges impacting on the delivery of patient care. The programme will empower you, as an SRL, to represent your profession to influence the healthcare research landscape, lead capacity and capability building initiatives and make innovative changes to research policy and practice.
This opportunity provides space and protected time for SRL’s to share their learning across organisations and the wider NHS. The Programme will fund each SRL to be seconded for three years at 0.4 WTE, at an Agenda for Change midpoint Band 8/or equivalent level, within a health and/ or social care setting. The first cohort of the programme will run from April 2023 until March 2026. The programme will run on an annual basis, with 15 nurses and midwives recruited to it every year.
We encourage applications from nurses and midwives working across a range of settings, including primary, secondary, community and social care. Applicants must be registered NMC nurses or midwives working within an organisation funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). This programme is open to applicants based in England only.
You will be informed of the decision made by the Selection Panel by the 16th December 2022.
You must be able to demonstrate how you can fulfil the following objectives:
Make a significant contribution to health or care services as a Senior Research Leader
Lead the development of research capacity and capability in nursing and midwifery in your organisation, mapping and linking research assets to provide a unified voice to the Board
Act as an ambassador for the NIHR SRL programme and the wider NIHR
Use links with local HEI/s to optimise the integration of clinical research into nursing and midwifery programmes
Work with SRL and NIHR Nursing and Midwifery colleagues to develop or pilot initiatives related to DHSC, NIHR or NHSE/I research goals, such as flexible research workforce models.
- Have a strong commitment and drive to promote equitable and inclusive practices within their organisations and beyond.
What will you bring to the role?
You will be required to fulfil the following criteria to proceed with your application:
- Registered Nurse or Midwife; registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Working in a Health and/or Social Care Setting that receives funding from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)
- Operating at an Agenda for Change band 8, or equivalent level, within a health and/or social care setting
- You will need to obtain confirmation from your supporting organisation that you can undertake the SRL:NM programme on a 0.4 WTE basis over three years (April 2023-March 2026)
