The NIHR Impact Vision describes how we will better understand, learn and improve how NIHR activities make a difference. To maintain public investment and involvement in research, we have a duty to show the benefits of taxpayer-funded research to wider society – economically, socially and culturally.
We are committed to continuous learning and improving what we do. Through our combined activities and efforts in adding value in research, research on research and evaluation, we ensure our funding practices and policies are based on and informed by the best available evidence. The Impact Advisory Board is an external advisory committee that provides support and advice of NIHR’s delivery in this area.
Purpose of the role
We are seeking a Co-chair of the NIHR Impact Advisory Board (IAB). The IAB supports the DHSC Senior Management Team and NIHR Impact Programme by providing advice and critical thinking on the work being delivered through ensuring appropriate methods and approaches are utilised and that the work being progressed by NIHR is relevant to our key stakeholders. In particular, based on IAB members’ practical experience and expertise, they assess its relevance from a patients and public, industry, NHS, funder, research, clinical and health and social care perspective.
You will be asked to attend 3 board meetings per annum (currently virtual however this may change in the future), and your skills and expertise may also be called upon for ad hoc support throughout the year NIHR Impact Programme and your availability. The position is for a minimum term of 3 years.
Please note that this is an advisory board and not a governance structure tied to accountability as NIHR already has multiple accountability mechanisms established.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for committed individuals with insight and interest in health and social care research.
Applicants should have:
- Senior leadership experience and skills associated with chairing board-level meetings
- Passion and enthusiasm for how health and social care research makes a difference
- A team-centred, collaborative approach with an ability to constructively challenge views, and to take an active part in debate to seek resolution
- Ability to facilitate consideration of issues or ideas from different perspectives and reflect on the bigger picture (beyond own personal interests and experience)
- Some prior knowledge of the NIHR and our mission and the health research ecosystem
