The NIHR is currently reviewing its Open Access (OA) policy for peer-reviewed research publications that result from research supported by the NIHR. OA aims to make the published findings of publicly-funded research freely available online as soon as possible, in ways that will maximise re-use. OA maximises the academic, societal and economic impact of research, and enhances the integrity and rigour of research through greater openness and transparency.
As part of this review, we have been working closely with our stakeholder community. Due to a large proportion of our stakeholders being instrumental to the COVID-19 pandemic response, we will postpone our planned stakeholder engagement until further notice. However, this remains a priority area of work and we are committed to working with our community to understand the challenges and opportunities of OA publishing. In the meantime, we would welcome any information, evidence or feedback to assist us with our OA policy review via openaccess@nihr.ac.uk.
Please note that UKRI has extended the deadline for submissions to their OA policy consultation by six weeks to noon on Friday 29 May 2020. The findings of the UKRI consultation will support the exploration of OA issues across the UK Government.
